Give that Man a Bottle of Backsberg
Backsberg Wine Estate Tour 2014
The Annual Smuts Hall Tour of the Backsberg Wine Estate was held on Saturday 15 March. Displaying the same discipline which gets them out of bed for 8am lectures, the Smutsmen were on the road early on Saturday morning, as they took the hour long journey to the gorgeous wine estate owned by Simon Back and his family, who have been long-time friends of Smuts Hall.
The tour saw Smutsmen getting a first-hand look at the manufacturing process of wine, which we enjoy at the Smuts Hall events such as High Tables, Academic and Sports Dinners, Forums and the Smuts Formal.
The event served as an educational experience for the Smutsmen, many having never been to visit a wine estate. The experience included a look at the sustainability projects of Backsberg, who are the official sponsor of the University of Cape Town’s Green Campus Initiative Society. Smutsmen were also given an intimate tour of the inner workings of wine production facilities, being exposed to the intoxicating scents (be it compost or fermenting grapes).
One member of the Smuts entourage mentioned rethinking, but not abandoning, his desire to own and run a wine estate after seeing all the hard work that goes into it. The day was then brought to a close with some wine tasting and a meal prepared especially for the occasion. The education continued as Simon Back personally offered Smutsmen the finer points on being a wine connoisseur.
Head Student, Kevin Mashishi thanked Simon Back for this opportunity, before Chris Campbell of the Smuts Hall Alumni Association thanked Backsberg for their long-time support and friendship, as well as expressing his hopes for a continued productive relationship between Smuts Hall and Backsberg Wine.
