Smuts Hall Residence and National Monument
Upon arrival as a freshman each Smutsman is immediately welcomed at the historical entrance by the House Committee, led by the Head Student, as well as four sub-wardens. These individuals are fully trained to deal with any situation which may arise throughout the year.
There are a number of administrative procedures that need to be complete before residents can check in. All registered Smutsmen will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of rooms that have been placed in a hat. 80% of 1st year rooms are single rooms. If any incoming Smutsmen are unhappy with their room selection, they can approach a sub-warden and request to be put on to a waiting list for room changes.

Freshmen are then accompanied to their rooms by a senior member of the house and are briefed on important rules within the residence. This will also give freshmen the opportunity to ask any questions, ensuring the nerve wrecking experience of leaving home is mitigated as much as possible.
Each year the house committee, sub-wardens and various sub-committees work endlessly to ensure a comprehensive and exciting Orientation Week experience for the new freshmen.
Activities range from boat trips at the V&A Waterfront, trips to Mzoli’s, paintballing and interacting with over 5 different female residences through the week. During this period all freshmen are encouraged to attend all events; this provides the best opportunity to experience first year in Smuts Hall, and to start integrate into the Smuts Hall brotherhood.
